Sara Lee Soft and Smooth Mini Buns

I spied these Sara Lee Mini Buns at the store and bought 'em because I needed "slider" buns. What makes me nervous is how Sara Lee appeals to your nurturing nature to buy these buns for your kids.

You do want your kids to eat a full meal, isn't that correct?
Well, we have a solution!

While not apparently unhealthy according to the Nutritional Facts, after all the fiber content is 4% of daily requirements per bun, the ingredient statement is pretty lengthy. That's the part that usually makes me skittish.

Ingredients: Enriched bleached flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid), whole wheat flour, water, high fructose corn syrup, yeast, wheat gluten. Contains 2% or less of each of the following: soybean oil, salt, calcium sulfate, calcium proprionate (preservative), guar gum, distilled vinegar, dough conditioners (may contain one or more of the following: mono- and diglycerides, ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, sodium stearoyl lactylate, calcium peroxide, datem, calcium iodate, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, enzymes, L-cysteine), yeast nutrients (monocalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate and/or calcium carbonate), corn starch, butter (cream, salt), yellow corn flour, natural flavors, paprika extract (color), vitamin D3, soy lecithin, soy flour, sesame seeds.

So you have bleached flour, whole wheat flour, water, high fructose corn syrup, yeast and wheat gluten, followed by a bunch of junk for processing including a preservative which is higher up on the list.

Available at Stater Bros. for $2.99/12-pack.

I let the leftover buns sit in their package on the countertop until November 26th, when I finally decided to get rid of them. My intent was to wait until they became moldy, even just a little bit. I tired of waiting.

The buns looked, smelled, and felt just like they did day one, 3.5 months earlier! Sorry, I didn't taste them. I'll let you decide if you should feed these to your kids.
